Fort Dorchester

An oyster-shell, “tabby,” fortress, originally constructed here during the French and Indian War, was restored, and occupied by both the British and Patriots.

Overview

Located on the Ashley River, the park's significant features include, the remaining St. George's bell tower, the tabby Fort Dorchester, remains of shipping wharves that are visible during low tide and a complete archaeological town waiting to be discovered.

A kiosk and interpretive trail offer a self-guided walking tour with exhibits and waysides on the history of the village and the process of discovery through archaeological and historical research.

The Ashley River Blue Trail is one of the best-kept secrets for paddling and wildlife watching. Explore the historic Ashley River, which runs more than 30 miles from its headwaters in the Great Cypress Swamp to the Charleston Harbor.
