General Nathanael Greene deployed his infantry in three lines, militia in front of regulars, and advanced to engage Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart. The Continentals eventually gained the upper hand and pushed Stewart back to his camp. In the melee, Lt. Col. William Washington, cousin of George Washington, was unhorsed, wounded, and captured by the British.
The British pulled back to a brick mansion where they repulsed several attacks, buying time for Stewart to rally. He then launched a counterattack which forced Greene to withdraw.
While both sides claimed victory, Stewart eventually pulled back closer to Charleston.
