The Old Canal is one of the oldest major construction projects in South Carolina begun after Independence and is the first true canal in all of North America. Time

Paddle through the still black waters of Wadboo Creek, where the towering bald cypress seem to guard the legend of General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox.” Launch your kayak from the Rembert C. Dennis boat landing and head north into the Francis Marion National Forest, or let local experts at Blueway Adventures guide the way. If two wheels are more your speed, the 10,000-acre Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area offers miles of dirt and rock roads leading to unexpected treasures—like the ruins of Comingtee Plantation. One of South Carolina’s earliest plantations, the site is rich with history, from a haunted tree whispered about by plantation slaves to a long-lost treasure. In 1947, locals unearthed the colonial sacramental plate of Strawberry Chapel, hidden in a rotting chest to keep it from Union soldiers during the Civil War. Prefer four wheels? You can also reach Comingtee by car and explore its storied past at your own pace.
