President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.
On June 27, 1825, General Lafayette left Concord, New Hampshire, traveling towards Claremont. He first stopped in Hopkinton, then Warner, then Bradford. He greeted citizens in each location and dined in Bradford. He left Bradford and was met by a committee from Newport in Wendell. The committee escorted Lafayette to Colonel Cheney's home in Newport, where he was received. Lafayette’s arrival was celebrated with artillery fire, and he greeted many citizens. He then left Newport late in the evening to go on to Claremont, New Hampshire.
