Battle of the Capes

The Battle of the Capes occurred around the mouth of Chesapeake Bay in 1781. The naval battle occurred between the French and the British navies. Even though the battle lasted two hours, it played a significant role in the Siege of Yorktown's success, ultimately leading to the United States' independence.

Know Before You Go

Although this battle took place almost 12 miles from the coast, a small park can be found along the shore on Cape Henry in Virginia Beach. The park commemorates the battle with interpretive signage and a statue in honor of Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse and his naval forces.
