Newburyport was an influential shipbuilding center in colonial New England. During the Revolutionary War, Patriot Colonel Benedict Arnold gathered men and supplies in Newburyport before setting sail for the Kennebec River on September 19, 1775 for his expedition to Quebec.

The Custom House Maritime Museum has multiple galleries that interpret the region’s maritime past. The Museum offers an audio tour online and conducts regular educational programs.
