General Lafayette Marker, Portsmouth, New Hampshire (NH-13)

Following the Revolutionary War, Lafayette accepted an invitation from George Washington and returned to America. The Marquis de Lafayette departed France in mid-June 1784 and arrived in New York City on August 4. The five‑month goodwill visit reconnected him with George Washington, celebrated his role in American independence, and strengthened political and commercial ties between the United States and France. He would return again in 1824-1825.

General Lafayette visited Portsmouth, arriving late in the evening on Saturday, October 30, 1784. Because his arrival was unexpected, local citizens announced his presence by ringing town bells and cheering. Lafayette remained in Portsmouth until the morning of Monday, November 1, 1784. Due to the short notice and the brevity of the visit, residents expressed regret regarding their limited ability to provide formal entertainment. However, the town honored him with multiple 13-cannon salutes, continued bell ringing, and a display of colors.
