Newport, NH

President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.

On June 27, 1825, General Lafayette made a stop in Newport, New Hampshire. A July 9, 1825 article from The Farmers’ Cabinet describes the visit: A committee from Newport met him in Wendell, and escorted him to the house of Col. Cheney, where he was received and welcomed; after which he proceeded to the house of J. Breck, Esq. where a collation was prepared, of which, however, he could not stay to partake. A large number of citizens had collected, and a salute was fired by a company of artillery paraded on the common. It was nearly dark when he left Newport.
