President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.
On September 18, 1824, General Lafayette was received at the Troy House. The September 28, 1824, edition of The Statesman recalls the visit: When the head of the procession arrived at Troy House, it halted; and the General moved forward between the open ranks of the military, to the front of the building, where he alighted, and was conducted into the front parlor, which was tastefully decorated on the occasion. He was then introduced to Mrs. Emma Willard, Principal of the Female Seminary.
