Stony Brook Grist Mill

The Revolutionary War arrived on Long Island in a way that felt very close to home, with British forces taking control directly after their victory at the Battle of Long Island in August 1776. They held onto the island for the entire duration of the war. During this time, the mill at Stony Brook was busy, grinding grains that helped feed the British soldiers.

Stony Brook Grist Mill was built in 1665 and rebuilt in 1751 after the original mill was washed away in a powerful flood. During the American Revolution, Joseph Brewster ran a tavern and general store, hosting British troops within the building. His cousin, Caleb Brewster, was an American Patriot and likely a frequent visitor to the tavern. Caleb was also a member of George Washington's Culper Spy Ring during the Revolutionary War.
