Sagtikos Manor

Sagtikos Manor was strategically located along the King’s Highway on Long Island, making it an ideal British command point. It was owned by the prominent Thompson and Gardiner families. General Henry Clinton used multiple headquarters across New York during the war; Sagtikos served as one of his local Long Island bases, while New York City remained his primary headquarters. In April 1790, George Washington recorded in his diary an overnight stop at "Squire Thompson's" during his tour of Long Island. The original section was built around 1697 and is a 1+¹⁄₂-story, timber-framed structure with a gable roof.
