Constructed between 1755 and 1759 in Fairfax County by Founding Father George Mason, Gunston Hall stands as a quintessential 18th century Georgian Mansion. Designed by indentured servant William Buckland, the home has combination of rococo, gothic, and Chinese influence in its interior, making it a stark contrast to the simple decoration style exhibited by other homes in Virginia. Its construction was almost entirely completed by indentured servants from England that the Mason family had hired in exchange for their free passage to the New World.

Named for the town in England the Mason family originated from, Gunstone in South Staffordshire, it remained as a part of the Mason familial estate until the late nineteenth century. During the Reconstruction Era, it was occupied by Edward Daniels, a politician, abolitionist, and former Union cavalry officer. However, by the turn of the 20th century, it was sold, yet again, but was restored and turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a museum by its new owners by 1949.

Today, the home, gardens, trails, and visitor center are open for tours and public events are hosted throughout the year.
