On August 6, 1777, British forces under the command of Sir John Johnson engaged American forces under Nicholas Herkimer in the Battle of Oriskany, resulting in one of the few battles of the war where all the participants were North American.

Know Before You Go

Visitors can learn more about British operations in the Hudson Valley at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site, where the Battle of Oriskany occurred on August 6, 1777. The site hosts a visitor center, interpretative signs, and a memorial to those that fought on the site, erected in 1884.
