Bowen Plantation House
Historical Marker DatabaseCaptain William Bowen built this historic federal-style house in 1787. The bricks were made on‑site from local clay, and the limestone foundation was quarried nearby. Bowen served in the French and Indian War, Lord Dunmore's War, and the American Revolutionary War, for which he was paid in land grants (in Tennessee). His grandson, William Bowen Campbell, served in the U.S. Congress from 1837-1843 and as the Governor of Tennessee from 1851-1853. The house is the oldest, and possibly first, brick structure constructed in mid-Tennessee. As such, Bowen was among the first permanent settlers in this part of the state.
The Bowen Plantation House is a rare surviving example of early 18th‑century brick architecture in Middle Tennessee, offering a tangible link to the region’s Revolutionary War history and early settlement.
