Lafayette Tour Marker, Lynn, Massachusetts (MA-62)

Lynn, MA

President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.

On August 31, 1824, General Lafayette arrived in Lynn, MA. The September 4, 1824 edition of the Independent Chronicle & Boston Patriot details the visit: He [Lafayette] was escorted into Lynn by a cavalcade of citizens, the Essex Battalion of Cavalry and a Battalion of Light Infantry, composed of the Salem Cadets, the Lynn Light Infantry and the Lynn Rifle Corps, the whole under Capt. Winn. At the Hotel, the General was addressed on behalf of the town by John White, Esq. in a neat and pertinent manner, to which he made an appropriate reply.
