The former home and birthplace of famed portraitist Gilbert Stuart, who immortalized Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Adams, and John Quincy Adams; heroes of the Revolution and War of 1812; and prominent statesmen and society men and women of the day. His most famous work is his "unfinished" portrait of George Washington, which now appears on the one-dollar bill. This iconic portrait is dubbed "The Athenaeum," and it is displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The museum is authentically restored and furnished to resemble a true 1750s home, which includes a working gristmill, gardens, woodland trails, art exhibitions, and more.
