World War I Memorial at Miantonomi Hill

Visit Rhode Island

Indigenous people used the area around the park for hundreds of years, and the park (and the hill it is on) is named after Narragansett Sachem, or Chief Miantonomi. At different times, colonial, British, and French forces held the hill due to its commanding views. Historical accounts place Miantonomi Hill within the operational landscape of the Battle of Rhode Island, notable for the participation of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, which included African Americans, Indigenous soldiers, and white colonists. The Park Commission built a stone tower in 1929 as a World War I memorial. Portions of the Revolutionary War earthworks still survive around the hill.
