The fort was built in 1776; local militia constructed an earthen battery, which the British later occupied during their invasion until they abandoned it in 1779. Originally a crescent-shaped earthwork, it was designed for six to eight heavy cannons and soldiers. The French then used it from 1780 to 1781.
