Know Before You Go

Princeton Battlefield State Park, just a mile southwest of Princeton University, maintains and interprets the scene of George Washington's 1777 victory. The famous Mercer Oak, not far from where General Hugh Mercer supposedly fell during the battle, fell on March 3, 2000 — but a sapling of the legendary tree was planted in its place. While the Mercer Oak fell, the Thomas Clarke House still stands. Built in 1772, the house witnessed fierce fighting and now contains period items and Revolutionary War exhibits. The Ionic Colonnade and a stone patio mark the grave of 21 British and 15 American soldiers killed in the battle. Several trails cross the battlefield.
