Arnold's Tavern

The Arnold Tavern, constructed in the mid-18th century, served as Washington's headquarters from January - May 1777

Arnold’s Tavern once stood here, overlooking Morristown Green. Built in the mid-1700s by Samuel Arnold, the three-story structure served as General George Washington’s headquarters during the Continental Army’s winter encampment from January to May 1777.

From this very spot, Washington coordinated the war effort at a critical moment. Just beyond the Green stood supply depots and workshops that kept the army running. Nearby Ford Mansion—used as a Delaware regiment's quarters in 1777 and Washington’s headquarters during a later encampment—and Jockey Hollow—where the army endured the brutal winter of 1779–1780—remain lasting reminders of Morristown’s strategic importance. While here in 1777, Washington wrote urgent letters to Congress pleading for reinforcements and supplies, fighting not just the British, but the slow erosion of his army through illness, hardship, and desertion.
