Cannonball House at Springfield Battlesite

This Revolutionary War landmark withstood fierce fighting during the Battle of Springfield. A British cannonball struck the home — and the scar remains visible today. Inside, the house has been restored and now serves as a museum filled with artifacts, documents, and stories that bring the 1780 battle to life.

Springfield, NJ

The Battle of Springfield took place in late June of 1780 as part of a second attempt by British forces to invade New Jersey and destroy the army of George Washington. Using the Watchung Mountains as a strategic position from which to stall British movement, Washington engaged with the enemy at Springfield and was able to stop their attempt on his supply garrison at Morristown. The Cannonball House was struck from the western side by, presumably, Patriot artillery.

Today the town of Springfield has many Revolutionary War markers and exhibits maintained by local and state oraganizations alike.
