Liberty Hall

Liberty Hall was home to trailblazing governors, congressmen, senators, assembly persons, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs. Inhabited by William Livingston, New Jersey’s first elected governor and a signer of the United States Constitution, the 14-room Georgian-style home evolved over time into a 50-room Victorian mansion.

The Battle of Connecticut Farms took place in June of 1780 and was part of Washington's defense of the second British invasion into New Jersey. Using the Watchung Mountains as a barrier to British movement, the Patriots repeatedly dulled the thrusts of both mercenary Hessian and British regular armies. Located near the site of the battle is Liberty Hall, home of the governor of New Jersey at the time and later a member of the constitutional convention.

Liberty Hall now houses a museum run by Kean University - the grounds and building contain exhibits on colonial life and the battle nearby.

Stories from Liberty Hall

Trail Site

The Battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield were small but at the same time significant. It proved that New Jersey militia would stubbornly oppose any attempt by the British to move inland. The battles also showed that militia and Continental regular troops could work well together.
