In early 1777, Morristown Green bustled with the sound of Continental soldiers drilling and marching under the watchful eye of General George Washington. At the edge of the Green stood Arnold’s Tavern, then serving as Washington’s headquarters, along with other 18th-century homes and public buildings that framed this 2½-acre common. The Green was not just a military space—it was the heart of Morristown’s civic life during the Revolution.
Today, the Green remains a focal point, surrounded by historic landmarks that recall its wartime significance. Statues of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and the Marquis de Lafayette mark the site of a pivotal meeting held nearby on May 10, 1780, when France formally committed to the American cause. Due east is Ford Mansion, where Washington stayed during the harsh winter of 1779–1780, and not far beyond lies Jockey Hollow, where the army camped during that time. These sites, together with the Green, preserve the story of Morristown as the military and symbolic crossroads of the Revolution.
