Beverly Robinson House, West Point, NY

Built in 1758 for Lt. Col. Beverley Robinson and his wife, Susanna Philipse, heiress to the vast Philipse lands in the Hudson Highlands. The house was located on the east side of the Hudson, directly opposite West Point Academy, at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain. When Benedict Arnold took command of West Point in 1780, he chose the Robinson House as his headquarters—despite the Robinsons being Loyalists. Here, Arnold secretly colluded with the British to render West Point defenseless prior to an attack. It was inside this house that Arnold learned his plot to betray West Point had been exposed, prompting his dramatic escape to the British ship Vulture. Washington then placed Major General Israel Putnam in command, and as Arnold had done, he made the Robinson residence his headquarters. A portion of the home was also used as a military hospital for officers. The home was destroyed by fire on March 17, 1892. The Beverly Robinson House marker is located inside Fort Putnam at West Point.
