The mansion was built around 1764 for General Nicholas Herkimer, who played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. In 1777, he led 800 militiamen and 60 allied Oneida warriors to defend Fort Stanwix, culminating in the Battle of Oriskany, one of the war's bloodiest battles. Although wounded, Herkimer maintained command and was carried home, where he died ten days later from complications following the amputation of his leg. The estate also housed his family, enslaved people, soldiers, and local refugees during the conflict, and the mansion was fortified with gunports during wartime
