The Battle of Monmouth took place on June 28, 1778, between the Continental Army and British forces, and is now preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park.

Experiences

Historic Tours

The Friends of Monmouth Battlefield offer monthly guided hikes, while self-guided tours are available with detailed hiking guides from the Visitor Center. Along the trails, visitors can explore wayside exhibits on Perrine Hill, Combs Hill, and key battlefield sites to learn more about the battle.

Museum/Visitor Centers

Perched atop Combs Hill, the Visitor Center offers exhibits on the battle and those who fought it. Watch Washington’s strategy unfold in fiber-optic animation, explore the story of the real "Molly Pitcher," and see history come to life through artifacts, paintings, and audiovisual displays. Open Wednesday–Sunday, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Outdoor Activities

Biking

Designated portions of the park exist for both road and mountain biking.

Hiking

Explore 25 miles of farm roads, paths, and field edges, tracing the footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers. With trails ranging from half a mile to several miles, history buffs and hikers can immerse themselves in the battlefield’s past.

Horseback Riding

Visitors are permitted to explore the park on horseback on designated trails. Horse rentals are not available.

Programming

Historic Re-Enactments

Every third weekend in June, Monmouth comes alive with Revolutionary War re-enactors honoring the battle’s anniversary. Explore the encampments, watch drills and cannon fire, and witness troops marching and charging as musket shots echo through the hills.
