Historic home of the Philipse family, staunch Loyalists during the Revolutionary War.
Frederick Philipse III and his family resided in this elegant mansion until his arrest in 1776, on orders from General George Washington, for his Loyalist beliefs. On November 28, 1776, Frederick Philipse and 200 others signed a document declaring their allegiance to England and their unwillingness to support the Revolutionary cause. Philipse and his family eventually fled to England, and his land and mansion were confiscated and sold at public auction. Today, the Hall serves as a museum of history, art, and architecture, as well as a community center. Highlights include its 18th-century Georgian architecture, a 1750s papier-mache Rococo ceiling, and a collection of presidential portraits.
