The Valentine–Varian House is a historic home located in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. Site of skirmishes between British and American forces because of its commanding position over the Boston Post Road.
Built in 1758 by Isaac Valentine, the stone farmhouse sat on one of the highest points in the East Bronx, overlooking the main north–south artery, the Boston Post Road. Whoever held the house could observe and control troop movement between Kingsbridge, Fordham, and White Plains. It saw frequent skirmishes, raids, and military movements, especially during the 1776 campaign and the 1778 fighting in the Neutral Ground—a violent no‑man’s‑land between British‑held Manhattan/Bronx and Patriot‑held Westchester. George Washington’s army, British regulars, Hessians, Loyalist raiders, and militia units all passed through or camped nearby.
