Consecrated in 1763, Touro Synagogue was the only purpose‑built Jewish house of worship in the colonies that survived the Revolutionary era. By the 1770s, Newport was a major port city — and a target. When the British occupied Newport (1776–1779), the Jewish community fled. Fearing destruction or confiscation, they sent the synagogue’s deed and Torah scrolls to Congregation Shearith Israel in New York for safekeeping. The synagogue’s endurance during this period helped make it a powerful symbol of religious freedom in the new republic.
