Fort Adams, named after President John Adams, is a National Historic Landmark built between 1824 and 1857 and is the United States' most complex coastal fortification, with extensive land and sea defenses. Active through WWII, at the start of the Civil War it housed the underclassmen of the U.S. Naval Academy, -- then recently evacuated from Annapolis, Maryland.
