St. John's Episcopal Church, Elizabeth, NJ
Forgotten Victory TrailJonathan Dayton, a soldier of the New Jersey Line and later a signer of the Constitution, is buried at Saint John’s. His father, Elias, commanded the 3rd New Jersey Regiment, placing the Dayton family directly within the military community that defended the region in 1780. The churchyard also recalls John DeHart, a delegate to the Continental Congress. Visiting Saint John’s alongside Caldwell’s Presbyterian church broadens the religious picture of Elizabethtown. Allegiance could divide neighbors and congregations, and an Anglican background did not determine every individual’s political choice. The present Gothic church dates to after the Revolution, while the burial ground preserves the older community’s connections.
